Branding (or re-branding) your business can be a daunting process. After all, this new logo, website, or print piece will represent your business for weeks, months, or years, so it’s got to be “perfect.”

Here are 3 tips to make this process less intimidating.

1. Hire a pro.

I know it’s tempting to save money by letting your little cousin who is good with computers hack out your logo or build your GoDaddy website, but unfortunately that’s a cheap solution that’s going to hurt in the long run. That’d be like attempting to save money by cutting your own hair. Sure, you’ll save $25-$30, but you may end up looking like Mo’ from the Three Stooges.

When it comes to creating a memorable brand, website, or print piece, it’s best to leave it to the pros. You want it done correctly the first time, and a good designer will make the process fun and exciting rather than stressful and anxiety-ridden.

2. Know your budget and understand what you’re paying for.

People ask all the time, “how much does a logo/website cost?” That’s a very important question, but unfortunately there’s no clear cut answer. It’s like asking how much a car costs. You can buy 1980 Mazda with 300,000 miles from the used car lot for $400 or you can buy a 2020 Lamborghini Huracan for $300,000. Both are still “cars,” but one is valued waaaayyy higher than the other.

The same goes for a logo or a website, you definitely get what you pay for. I’ve seen designers charge $500-$1,000 for a logo and I’ve seen agencies charge $8,000-$10,000 for a logo. Is one design better than the other?Potentially not, but what you’re paying for is the expertise and the industry knowledge of the designer, or designers, involved.

Some things to consider are how much risk is involved in having the right logo, how many branding elements will this logo touch, and how much do I value this logo being right vs. designed quickly vs. done cheaply (Hint: you can only pick 2).

3. Patience is key.

Good things come to those who wait. Understandably, there are time constraints in the branding process, but this is something you’ll want to be patient, take your time, and focus on the end product rather than forcing something that’s not right for the sake of hitting a deadline.

I’ve had logos take 2 hours, and I’ve had logos take 2 months. Sometimes you get to that Aha! moment quickly and sometimes there’s a lot of deliberation back and forth. The key is to know and trust the designers process and to understand that good quality work takes time (unless you’re hit square in the face with the perfect logo concept…that’s happened many times!)
